STEM GEMS

The Sativus STEM GEMS Program has been established to help students with a passion for science build essential skills needed to explore the wonderful career diversity STEM has to offer. STEM GEMS is a learning program created by scientists and educators, for students and teachers, to help those interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to Grow, Evolve, Mentor and Succeed. Improving scientists’ ability to develop ideas and critical thinking skills, manage projects, collaborate and communicate science underpins their ability to solve real-world problems and create science with impact.

The STEM GEMS program encompasses two main phases: Phase 1 is a professional development workshop for STEM teachers that delivers content aligned to the Australian Curriculum. This forms the foundation for Phase 2 of the program, which involves effectively teaching real-world STEM skills to high school students.

The STEM GEMS Program helps students be better prepared for the realities of working in STEM, and gives teachers the skills and resources they need to support their students.

Project-based learning assessments that are based on a hypothesis or challenge that generates students’ curiosity engage and motivate the students to succeed in their chosen field.

As such, the STEM GEMS Program helps teachers integrate key concepts into their curriculum using a project selected from the Australian Curriculum’s Environment portfolio to allow students to use scientific inquiry skills that target an identified need in their school. The ‘playground project’ will be used to integrate the teachers’ new professional development material with the students’ newly learned STEM GEMS skills using a 6E framework of STEM curriculum integration.

The STEM GEMS Program includes course resources that are uniquely designed in line with the school curriculum to provide extra support for teachers and provide a step-by-step guide on what information needs to be integrated into their curriculum, and when.

Sativus Workshops are tailored sessions for large groups of people (> 7) to provide a high-level overview of key aspects of the Sativus Gems professional development program. They can be held over multiple, consecutive days and include interactive components to enhance the learning experience.

A Sativus Bootcamp is designed to be an intensive, targeted and tailored learning experience to improve, shape or refine skills that are critical for achieving a goal.

 

A scientific presentation is a great way to get exposure, because while you are speaking, you and your science are the centre of attention. Most people will only remember about 10% of a presentation, and a boring presentation or slides filled with distractions will mean they remember even less. Therefore, putting the right information in your presentation, in the right order, is a critical element to delivering an impactful presentation that leaves the audience engaged with you and your science.​ Read more

As a scientist, you are often required to write reports that accurately describe the work you have completed. The ability to effectively write your science reports in a way that people can easily understand, and follow, is an important skill that is imperative to successfully communicating your research to others. Project management skills can mean the difference between success and failure. Poor project management compromises the quality of a project’s conduct, its outcomes and outputs, and reflects poorly on the scientist. Project management skills will help scientists improve their ability to meet milestones, avoid risks and issues and improve access to opportunities, including additional funding. Read more

Most scientists at one stage or another are involved in the preparation and submission of an article or paper to a scientific journal. Publishing in a journal is usually a great way for your science to be impactful, accessible and contribute to your field. This Bootcamp will help you enhance the way you write scientific journal articles, so that you can increase the audience and impact of your science. If you want a long, successful career as a scientist, you need to know how to prepare an effective grant application or proposal – knowing how to articulate and align your ideas with the priorities of those providing funding is a critical skill. Grants may be needed for external or internal funding from the government, not-for-profit and private sectors. While they may vary in length and scope, the basic principles are the same, and receiving grant funding is essential if you want a career as a research scientist. Read more

As a scientist, you are often required to summarise your research and findings in less than 400 words, and usually in the form of a scientific abstract. This may be the only information people read, so don’t underestimate its importance! The ability to translate your science into words that people can easily read and understand is an important skill that is imperative to successfully communicating your research to others. This Bootcamp will help you enhance the way you write and summarise your science, to produce concise and impactful communications. Read more
